The Nintendo Switch console"s sales are still going strong after a successful debut last year. Perhaps its popularity is what caught programmers" attention, because there"s already an open-sourced emulator in the works.
Dubbed project yuzu, the emulator is written in C++ and is functional for Windows, Linux and macOS. The official website notes that the emulator is for homebrew (consumer created software used to play official console games) and research.
The project was started by Bunnei last spring, one of the creators of the Citra 3DS emulator. The Nintendo 3DS system and Nintendo Switch share some similar coding, so Bunnei was able to use progress from the Citra emulator to create Yuzu and both projects continue to benefit one another.
Yuzu is in its early stages and cannot currently be used to play any Switch games.
It"s unknown how long the Yuzu project will be able to exist, at least publicly. Nintendo often shuts down fan projects that encroach on its IP.
